Myrtle Beach High School鈥檚 Kai Wilmot and North Myrtle Beach鈥檚 Fenna Hollo were the two individual champions in the 2024 Horry County Cross Country Championship meet, which took place at the North Myrtle Beach Park and Sports Complex on Wednesday, Oct. 23.

Wilmot ran a time of 16:48 in the 5K run to take home the top spot, helping the Myrtle Beach boys team capture the team title.

Hollo鈥檚 time of 19:42 was good enough for her first-place finish, leading the North Myrtle Beach girls team to a county championship.

The Myrtle Beach boys defeated Conway by just a total of two overall points, as the Tigers had four finishers in the top 10 (Coleman Drake, Tripp Inabnit, Dakota Gore and Johnny Guerrero-Antunez.) The next highest-finishing runner for Myrtle Beach was Liam Maguire, who finished 10th overall.

North Myrtle Beach鈥檚 Robyn Walsh was the fifth-place finisher on the girls side, helping solidify the Chiefs鈥 top finish. They finished ahead of Socastee, as the Braves were led by second-place finisher Layla Holladay and fourth-place finisher Ella Kelly.

The Green Sea Floyds boys team was the only team in either the boys and girls division to finish outside of the top two in the team race but have two individual finishers in the top five: Cole Forbus (4th) and Abram Suggs (5th).

Aynor girls volleyball set to be top seed in Lower State

Courtesy of a dominant tiebreaker win over 黑料社入口, the Aynor girls volleyball team officially locked up the No. 1 seed out of their region and will be the overall No. 1 seed in the Lower State bracket. The state playoffs begin on Thursday, Oct. 31.

The tiebreaker match took place on Monday, Oct. 22. The Blue Jackets and 黑料社入口 were technically tied and labeled co-region champions after both going 9-1 in region competition. Monday鈥檚 match was to determine who would ultimately receive the top seed out of the region.

Aynor girls volleyball is led by senior captains Alaina Brown, Hannah Lewis, Phoebe Johnson and Riley Rabon and junior Lainey Johnson.

Guthinger brings state title home to St. James

Jenna Guthinger, a St. James ninth-grader, won the Class 5A-Division II girls 100-meter butterfly state championship last week in Columbia. She won with a time of 56.71. Only one other swimmer came within two seconds of Guthinger鈥檚 time.

鈥淛enna鈥檚 dedication to the sport is unmatched,鈥 Brian Griggs, St. James head varsity swim coach, said. 鈥淪he practices two times a day most days during the season鈥 Jenna will probably leave St. James High School as the most distinguished swimmer in the school鈥檚 history. She will hold the most school records when she graduates.鈥

Postseason begins next week for other Horry teams

Plenty of playoff action will be kicking off next week around the state, which means many Horry County schools will be kicking off playoff competition next week.

Local girls volleyball action will begin on Thursday, Oct. 31. Local standout teams to watch include North Myrtle Beach, led by senior Olivia Borgman and Atlantic Collegiate Academy, led by Ella Handley and Reese Feldman.

Girls tennis action will also begin on Thursday. Local girls golf competitions will take place during the week, with things kicking off on Monday.
