The number of Horry County fall high school sports teams still alive in the playoffs is beginning to dwindle.
On Wednesday evening, Nov. 6, several top-ranked local programs suffered losses that ended their seasons, causing the county鈥檚 athletics schedule to shrink substantially as the area鈥檚 fall sports calendar begins to come to a close.
Carolina Forest boys volleyball, Conway girls tennis and Socastee boys volleyball all suffered losses on Wednesday night, ending their seasons.
Conway girls tennis鈥 loss to West Florence came as a fairly significant surprise. The Tigers played West Florence in the regular season twice, winning both matches by a 4-3 score. On Wednesday, West Florence was able to pull off a 4-2 victory, not needing a tiebreaker match in doubles.
The Carolina Forest boys volleyball team lost a back-and-forth battle with Wando, 3-2. The Panthers won the first set of the night and appeared poised to punch their ticket into the Class 5A-Div. I state finals, but Wando battled back and forced a fifth-set tiebreaker, which they won handily, 15-8.
Similar to Conway girls tennis鈥 situation with West Florence, Carolina Forest had defeated Wando twice in boys volleyball earlier this season.
Socastee boys volleyball suffered a road loss in the Lower State finals to top-seeded Lucy Beckham, 3-0. The Braves had punched their ticket to the Lower State championship with a win over Myrtle Beach last week.
With Carolina Forest and Socastee losing on Wednesday, boys volleyball season in Horry County is officially over.
Earlier in the week, another surprising area loss came when the Aynor girls volleyball team lost to Hanahan, 3-0. Aynor was the first-place finisher in Region V-3A, while Hanahan was the third-place finisher in Region VI-3A.
Just three local girls volleyball teams remain in playoff action, and all three are getting set for important third-round games on Thursday, Nov. 7.
North Myrtle Beach will host Myrtle Beach in a 鈥淏attle of the Beach鈥 playoff edition of the rivalry. The Chiefs will be heavily favored after knocking off the Seahawks twice during regular season play (3-0, 3-1). North Myrtle Beach continues to be led by standouts like senior Olivia Borgman and junior Clara Cloninger.

Atlantic Collegiate, which won its region, will host Philip Simmons in Thursday鈥檚 third round. The Armada is competing in the team鈥檚 first season of South Carolina High School League play after the school opened its doors last fall.
Two local girls tennis programs remain alive in playoff action. Myrtle Beach (Class 5A-Div. II) will hit the road to play No. 1 Lucy Beckham, while Carolina Forest (Class 5A-Div. I) will travel to No. 1 James Island.聽
