Coastal Carolina athletic director Chance Miller says the university鈥檚 new indoor practice facility will be much more than just a space for the football team to workout.
Miller, hired in June 2024 as CCU鈥檚 vice president for intercollegiate athletics and university recreation, says that the much-anticipated facility will be ready this spring. The project has been under construction across the street from Brooks Stadium since the fall of 2023 and will provide a new large indoor space for the school.
While the practice facility will be used by the football team, Miller said he is excited that the building will be able to be used in many different ways 鈥 even outside of athletics.
鈥淚 think a lot of times people just hear that it is a football indoor training facility, but it is more than that,鈥 Miller said in an interview with MyHorry黑料社入口. 鈥淲e have a number of teams that are going to be able to utilize this when the weather is bad outside, whether it be for training purposes or for practice.
鈥淎nd then, the university itself is going to be able to utilize it for a lot of different events. We鈥檝e already been talking about how we can use it for donor events and recognition events moving forward. We鈥檙e also going to look at opening it up to the community, and being able to bring people onto our campus to see what great things Coastal Carolina is doing.鈥
On top of campus and community events, Miller said the facility is going to open up more opportunities for other athletic programs at CCU to succeed.
The space will serve as a strong back-up plan for sports that can often have workouts adversely affected by bad weather.
鈥淵ou look at things like when the weather is bad outside, lacrosse can go over there and practice,鈥 Miller said. 鈥淭he soccers could go in there and practice. You could have track conditioning that goes on in there. Even baseball and softball, when the weather is bad outside鈥 it would be nice for them to be able to go in there and throw around.鈥
The $20 million facility is being funded, in large part, via gifts from donors like Conway Medical Center with Novant Health and Joe Moglia, former CCU coach and executive advisor to CCU President Michael T. Benson.
鈥淭o have donors and businesses from the community be able to step up and help us build something to that level that is going to be the nicest in the Sun Belt Conference, and probably one of nicer ones in the country, it just shows the type of donors and businesses we have that are committed to making Coastal Carolina better moving forward,鈥 Miller said. 鈥淚鈥檓 excited about what they have done and what they will continue to mean to us moving forward.鈥
Among the features of the facility will be a regulation-sized football field with artificial teal turf, filming platforms, athletic training rooms and more.
Wrapping up his first semester at CCU, Miller said the indoor facility project is one of many reasons why he is looking forward to what the future holds for Chanticleer athletics.
鈥淚 couldn鈥檛 be more excited moving forward,鈥 Miller said.
鈥淲e have a wonderful board of trustees. We have a wonderful president and his executive leadership team. I am surrounded by good people who want to go in the same direction. I think that is what I am really thankful for. It makes this job, when college athletics is crazy, a lot easier. We are going to do some special things. We have some things on the horizon that we are really excited about, and you鈥檙e going to see those things start to roll out sooner rather than later.鈥
