It鈥檚 safe to say that Carolina Forest rules the 5A girls tennis world in South Carolina.
The Panthers dominated Spartanburg 6-0 on Saturday at the Eddie Floyd Tennis Center in Florence. Carolina Forest dropped just nine sets in singles.
鈥淭o be honest, being back at the state championships this year is the most exciting thing, and to add to it, winning a second title this year is just a reminder of how special this moment is and how special this moment is and how special this group of girls are,鈥 said Carolina Forest coach Alexis McNabb. 鈥淚t鈥檚 unbelievable. I鈥檓 so proud.鈥
Olivia Bull led the way with a 6-2, 6-2 win in No. 1 singles. Katie Godree won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2 and Kristina Miroff cruised 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3. Payton Yates took a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 4 and Ellie Yates swept to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6.
The doubles team of Mayissa Dorcely and Helena Butwin took their match 6-3, 6-4.
It was an overwhelming margin of victory in a championship match, yet McNabb was supremely confident.
鈥淭o be honest, I wasn鈥檛 surprised at the score,鈥 she said. 鈥淣ot that Spartanburg wasn鈥檛 a competitive opponent at this final because they made the girls fight for it. But because my girls went into today with total focus, determination, and just plain confidence, I knew they would walk off that court today winners.鈥
It was just the latest sweep by Carolina Forest. After receiving a bye in the first round, the Panthers swept Berkeley 6-0 in the second round and West Ashley 6-0 in the third round. They then beat rival Conway 4-2 in the Lower State finals.
Spartanburg beat Hillcrest, Woodmont, J.L. Mann and T.L. Hanna to reach the finals.
