The Surfside Beach Pier opened in 2024 after the former pier was destroyed by Hurricane Matthew in 2016.

The Whistling Duck restaurant is slated to go into Building C on the Surfside Beach Fishing Pier 鈥 but the problem is, Building C was originally designed for retail use, not a full-functioning restaurant.

Surfside Beach Town Administrator Gerald Vincent told the town council Tuesday night, March 25, that a hood and range system must be installed in the building before the Whistling Duck can proceed.

The pier, which was completed in March 2024, has four buildings intended for retail or restaurant use. Drippy鈥檚 Ice Cream and Perry鈥檚 Bait and Tackle shop opened last year. The other two buildings have been leased to the Whistling Duck and Surf Diner, both of which were to open later this spring.

Vincent said that Perry鈥檚 had originally talked about moving into Building C but decided on the smaller Building B instead.

鈥淭he Whistling Duck had originally been a wine and cheese type of business and didn鈥檛 need a hood and range ventilation system,鈥 Vincent said. 鈥淏ut a previous council requested they serve breakfast and lunch and now they need that system for cooking.鈥

Vincent said the building will now have to be re-engineered to figure out how and where to put the hood system. He added that engineers are looking at the possibility of maybe using a vent-less system.

Vincent said the restaurant has been paying rent to the town since last October. With this delay, there is no definite opening date now.

Mayor Robert Krouse said this issue should have been known last year, not this late in the game.

鈥淭hey need to get going on this or we may need to find an alternative,鈥 Krouse said.

The owners of the Surf Diner said work is progressing on their restaurant and are still hoping to be in business by the time of high tourist season this summer.
