Beach Rescue North Myrtle Beach

Emergency personnel line the beach in North Myrtle Beach on the morning of Thursday, July 3, as the search continues for a 21-year-old swimmer who went missing the night before.

The search resumed Thursday morning for a 21-year-old swimmer who went missing off the coast near 48th Avenue South in North Myrtle Beach the night before.

Around 8 p.m. on Wednesday, July 2, two swimmers were reported in distress near the shoreline, according to Lauren Jessie, spokesperson for the city of North Myrtle Beach. Rescue swimmers and off-duty fire personnel pulled an 18-year-old male from the water. The 21-year-old male remains unaccounted for.

Rescue crews, including watercraft from fire and police departments and the North Myrtle Beach Rescue Squad, began searching the area Wednesday evening. The U.S. Coast Guard deployed a helicopter, which conducted an aerial grid search between Windy Hill and Cherry Grove beaches.

As night fell, local agencies transitioned to shoreline operations, and the Coast Guard suspended its aerial search just before 11:30 p.m. Police maintained a presence along the beach overnight.

Search efforts resumed early Thursday morning, with local first responders continuing to coordinate closely with the Coast Guard.

As of an update at 11:45 a.m. Thursday, the focus had shifted once again to both the beach and the ocean near 45th Avenue South, according to the City of North Myrtle Beach.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
