A rip current is hard to spot, but a break in the crest of a wave could signify one. This image shows a rip current off the coast of North Carolina.聽

A North Carolina man died after drowning in the ocean Friday, July 11, off North Myrtle Beach.

The Horry County Coroner's Office identified the man as 63-year-old Todd Hilliard of Kernersville, North Carolina. He 鈥渕ay have suffered a sudden medical event that caused him to lose consciousness while wading or swimming,鈥 said Horry County deputy coroner Michelle McSpadden. Hilliard鈥檚 death has been ruled a drowning.

According to a North Myrtle Beach police report, Hilliard's wife told first responders that he had a weak pulse and was on a ventilator. First responders also spoke to the first beachgoer who saw Hilliard while he was wading in waist-deep water. The witness told police that Hilliard was floating face up and that he was unresponsive. Lifeguards on scene were performing CPR when police arrived, and lifesaving measures were continued in the truck bed as Hilliard was taken off the beach.

Hilliard鈥檚 drowning comes nine days after two swimmers, aged 18 and 21, were pulled into the ocean from rip currents off North Myrtle Beach. The 18-year-old swimmer was rescued while the 21-year-old has still not been found.
