The end has come for River Oaks Golf Club.
Course operators have set a closing date of Oct. 31 for the course, which is slated to be redeveloped into single-family housing.
The clock started ticking on its final days when Chris Manning of Chris Manning Communities purchased the remaining 18 holes of the club in February 2024 and shortly thereafter began the permitting and approval process with Horry County and the state.
Manning said Monday he expects to have the necessary permits acquired in the fall to break ground on the development of 370 lots.
The course, now consisting of the Fox and Otter nine holes, is operated and managed through a lease by a group of investors under the name River Oaks Golf Club LLC that includes club general manager Scott Taylor.
Taylor said Monday his lease ends on Oct. 31, and that course conditions will continue to be maintained at a high level until the closing date. He said four greens have had areas sodded within the past two weeks with Sunday Ultra-Dwarf Bermudagrass, for instance.
鈥淲e invested the money to do it. I hate the comments that say we鈥檙e going to cut corners because we鈥檙e closing. That doesn鈥檛 benefit us,鈥 Taylor said. 鈥. . . I鈥檝e got my crew all coming in, everyone鈥檚 going to stick with us and everybody agrees we want River Oaks to be the best it can be with the time we have left.鈥

One lane each way on River Oaks drive is "Now" a nightmare. Postal Way next to the Publix all the way to the outlet is also one lane and accidents waiting to happen where the TDBank lot and entrance to the Publix is. Try getting by that road at 4:00 pm.They installed a traffic circle at the end of Postal Way by the entrance to the football stadium to Coastal Carolina HS. They are building there as well. Try getting by there when school lets out. Garner Lacy road entrance to Carolina Forest HS is another nightmare at 2:00 pm Monday thru Friday during school days. So even though they know this, they continue to approve new construction. How about you don't approve another project without the road infrastructure being done first. I have two questions. Where are you going to get the drinking water to supply all these homes. Secondly, how much more will we have to fork up to pay for the increase of homes through our taxes?
More development without any benefit. Stop the sprawl and the money hungry planning board and council. Greedy and incompetent politicians who can鈥檛 or won鈥檛 see what they鈥檝e done to the county and towns.
Exactly! We need to vote out - remove all of them! Carolina DeForest! And鈥e鈥檒l no longer be the 鈥淕olf Capital of the US鈥 in a couple of years! Greed, corruption and incompetence!
Is that a good thing or not, I'm not sure.
