Evacuations have been ordered as wildfires rage near several Carolina Forest area neighborhoods overnight Saturday, March 1.

Smoke can be seen behind several neighborhoods off Carolina Forest Boulevard. Evacuations are underway in Walkers Woods, Avalon, The Farm, Indigo Bay and Summerlyn.

A fire official told residents on Quinn Road to turn on sprinklers, hose down their roofs and remove any pine straw from their yard at about 11:30 p m. Donald and Rosie Gindlesverger live on Quinn Road and said they are worried about their home as they looked at embers rise from the trees from the woods near their home.

鈥淚t鈥檚 scary. You don't wanna lose everything,鈥 Rosie said.

Including things that can't be replaced.

鈥淵ou can lose your house, but then there's the stuff you can't replace. Pictures. Furniture I can buy. But pictures I took 40, 50 years ago. Cant replace that,鈥 Donald said.

Evacuations began in the Walkers Woods and Avalon neighborhoods at about 4:30 p.m.

The South Carolina Forestry Commission writes that the fire is 400 acres in size and 0% contained as of 10 p.m.

A 9 p.m. update from Horry County says the county is 鈥渟till working to measure the fire and its impact. That said, as of this time, no structures have succumbed and we continue to work toward containment.鈥

Residents of Tuckahoe and Wyandot Roads are being told they can return to their home, but that another evacuation may be possible if conditions worsen.

Evacuees from the Carolina Forest area are being asked to go to the Carolina Forest Recreation Center which has about 20 people checked into the center which has been set up as a shelter as of 9 p.m. The shelter has cots and food and is being managed by the Red Cross.

鈥淭hose in need of shelter who have animal needs/concerns should still connect with the shelter. The County is working to address needs of that sort,鈥 Horry County spokesperson Mikayla Moskov wrote in a 9 p.m. update.

International Drive is closed from Highway 90 to Ocean Bay Elementary School as the county uses the roadway for emergency response to the fire, the county announced. The road closure will last until further notice.

Horry County spokesperson Mikayla Moskov said the most vital need from the community is for those not impacted by the fire to steer clear of the area to keep roadways clear for emergency vehicles. Avalon and Walkers Woods are both located off Carolina Forest Boulevard, and emergency vehicles have flocked to the road to assist in evacuations and firefighting.聽

鈥淐rews are continuing to work toward the containment of this fire, with additional resources from partner agencies actively deployed to assist,鈥澛燞CFR wrote at 5:30.聽鈥淗ouses at risk in Walkers Woods and Avalon have been evacuated.鈥

Moskov also requested that the public not fly drones as they have the potential to impede with HCFR's efforts in fighting the fire which have included using drones to get an aerial view of the fire.

Earlier in the afternoon, about 100 acres were also burning near the Sun Outdoors RV resort and evacuations were made 鈥渙ut of an abundance of caution,鈥 HCFR reported in the early afternoon.

At 5:53 p.m., HCFR wrote that the South Carolina Forestry Commission estimated that the fire was 75% contained.

Firefighters were dispatched to the fire near Old Highway 90 and Edge Road at 1:25 p.m.

鈥淭his is an active incident. Crews are working to fully contain this fire and are protecting nearby structures,鈥 HCFR wrote. 鈥淎pproximately 20 structures are being evacuated out of an abundance of caution.鈥

Horry County and much of South Carolina has been under a burn ban as dry and windy conditions are causing an elevated wildfire risk. The South Carolina Forestry Commission issued a statewide Red Flag Fire Alert Friday, Feb. 28.

Another 100-acre fire on Thursday caused evacuations in the Sandridge community as a fire was impacting areas off Dirty Branch Road and Blain Lane. That fire has since been contained, HCFR reports.
