Horry County Council took another step toward its plans to get out of the baseball business at its June 3 council meeting.
Pelicans Ballpark, which is jointly owned by the City of Myrtle Beach and Horry County, needs $35.5 million in repairs and upgrades, city leaders say. Those costs include $20 million for Major League Baseball-mandated stadium improvements needed for Professional Development League play to continue in the stadium past the 2025 season.
As the city and county grappled with how those costs would be split, the county has moved forward with a deal to sell its 30% stake in the stadium to the city. The county proposed doing so for $6 million with the city countering at $10.7 million. At the June 3 council meeting, Horry County approved an ordinance and resolution to sell its stake for $8.25 million, seemingly meeting in the middle.聽
鈥淭he payment would reflect the county鈥檚 support to the city in performing improvements necessary to continue the lease for the Myrtle Beach Pelicans and convey the county鈥檚 30% interest in the stadium to the city,鈥 wrote Horry County spokesperson Mikayla Moskov.
The city council will decide whether to accept the county鈥檚 compromise offer at its next council meeting where it will give a final vote on a 30-year lease to keep the Pelicans in Myrtle Beach contingent on the stadium upgrades being paid for by the city.
Myrtle Beach Pelicans owner Chuck Greenberg said he had no comment other than he鈥檚 looking forward to the city鈥檚 next meeting.

Horry County should now take these funds and purchase a Cosm venue. Cosm is the newest technology in big screen entertainment. It is a Shared Reality
