cyber warriors

A local author has written a book about cybersecurity that includes local businesses.

Joel Chanaca grew up in the country, developing a love of nature, animals and life in general.

For 20 years, he鈥檚 parlayed that love of the outdoors into a successful career as a game warden. But in the last several years, he鈥檚 also brought that enthusiasm down another avenue: writing books.

Chanaca鈥檚 passion for writing might be deemed hereditary. His father John and mother Jane are also writers. All three have won Global Book Awards for their efforts.

The family of writers has published a series of family value books, delving into many personal and social issues faced by children and parents.

Joel鈥檚 latest work involves several of his personal passions鈥攈elping kids, keeping folks safe and promoting local businesses.

With a total of 26 years in law enforcement, Chanaca says he has seen cyber-crimes and especially bullying become more prominent.

鈥淜ids are often the targets and they don鈥檛 know how to handle it,鈥 he said. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 why I wrote this book.鈥

He also wanted to include local businesses as integral parts of the book, including Our Next Chapter bookstore on Main Street in Conway.

This latest pitch was a storybook adventure about cyber warriors.

It tells of two friends, Annie and Zoe, who are confronted with online bullying. As they try to make their way to their favorite bookstore, they encounter some strange occurrences before finding a consoling gentleman who shows them how to deal with this situation.

鈥淭his is a great resource for kids of all ages to learn about cybersecurity,鈥 Chanaca said. 鈥淚 look at it as a rescue mission with the lesson of how not to be a victim.鈥

Chanaca said his goal is not to make money off the book but to be a source of inspiration and help with the terrible possibilities of cyberbullying and other online attacks.

鈥淭he book is free to anyone,鈥 he said.

This book and the myriad of other books from Joel and his parents can be found at .
