The South Carolina Department of Transportation will begin work toward the end of the year on improvements to the main throughway of North Myrtle Beach.
U.S. Highway 17 improvements will be done on about two miles between Conway Street to 20th Avenue South. The project, currently in the design phase, is being funded by the Federal Highway Safety Improvement Program, according to an SCDOT spokesperson. The improvements to the road were initiated by SCDOT鈥檚 Office of Traffic Safety.
According to an SCDOT study from 2013-2018, more than 100 crashes occur per year on that portion of Highway 17.
Preliminary design plans show concrete median installations in locations that had a high frequency of angle collisions as well as yield to pedestrian signs on several intersections. Grass medians are proposed near 25th Avenue South, 37th Avenue South and Windy Hill Road.
Other proposed improvements include the installation of 5-foot-wide sidewalks through the town of Atlantic Beach. The traffic light on Atlantic Street, which currently has long wait times for those wishing to turn onto Highway 17, will also be upgraded. The project website at聽 includes maps showing proposed improvements and more information.
A community meeting was held Feb. 29 at the North Myrtle Beach Government Office atrium where residents could see proposed changes and submit feedback. Feedback is also being accepted online until March 15 at .
A cost estimate for the project will not be known until design work is complete, a spokesperson said. According to the SCDOT website, construction will begin late 2024 and will continue for around 18 months.
