Land is being cleared bordering neighborhoods in Carolina Forest as the Carolina Forest wildfire smolders Thursday, March 6.
The wildfire has burnt more than 2,000 acres and as winds continue and a drought persists, trees, grass and other flammable shrubs are being bulldozed away in the containment process.
As of 6 p.m. Thursday, the fire is 55% contained, officials said.
On Thursday morning, progress was being made in the Avalon neighborhood, one of many neighborhoods which had evacuations out of precaution during the worst of the fire early Sunday morning.

Forestry workers are in the Walkers Woods neighborhood clearing land and firefighters from various departments fight "hotspots" as the Carolina Forest wildfire continues to smolder. Air support from planes and helicopters will resume when wind speeds calm down, a firefighter said.聽

The National Weather Service Wilmington is forecasting strong winds in the morning Thursday with gusts up to 26 mph until the afternoon.
My Horry 黑料社入口 partner WMBF 黑料社入口 meteorologist Andrew Dockery reports that gusts could reach 30-35 mph. Despite the much-needed rain yesterday, the Grand Strand has four inches less rain in the past six months than normal, contributing to the threat of wildfires and ongoing drought, Dockery adds.聽
The South Carolina Forestry Commission's burn ban is still in effect for Horry and Georgetown counties.
"The two counties to remain under the burning ban are still at elevated wildfire risk and are the scenes of large response efforts," the commission wrote in a press release. "The 2,000+ acre Covington Drive Fire just outside Myrtle Beach in Horry County remains the largest active incident in the state, involving hundreds of personnel and resources as part of the response effort. Another separate, though previously contained, wildfire in the same area has hotspots that agency firefighters continue to monitor."
Wednesday, March 5, the commission lifted the burn ban on all 44 of the other counties in the state.

International Drive reopened to the public Wednesday afternoon after being closed to better accommodate emergency vehicle response.
Horry County Police Department issued a fifth citation for burning during the burn ban yesterday, March 5.聽Public officials say police are no longer posted at neighborhood checkpoints because the severe weather threat has passed and wildfire conditions are moderately stable.聽
Horry County Fire Rescue says they will post an update on containment and acreage midday, Thursday. HCFR also expressed their gratitude to the hundreds of personnel and over 40 agencies contributing to relief efforts via Facebook.
Investigators began their work in determining the initial cause of the blaze, with natural causes ruled out.聽
