Tropical Storm Chantal

Tropical Storm Chantal has formed over Fourth of July weekend near Myrtle Beach.

Tropical Storm Chantal has weakened to a tropical depression after it made landfall around Litchfield Beach 4 a.m. Sunday.聽

Forecasters say there is a high risk of rip currents along the Myrtle Beach coast. A flood watch continues through Monday, with some areas possibly seeing up to six inches of rainfall.

Chantal is moving at 8 mph, with sustain winds up to 35 mph as of noon Sunday. The storm is expected to weaken as it moves over land, and most of the rain is north of the storm's center, according to it's radar path.

The National Weather Service in Wilmington has issued a high surf advisory through 8 p.m. Sunday.

Forecasters say inexperienced swimmers should stay out of the ocean.

"Swim near a lifeguard," a message from the NWS states. "If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Don't swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help."

The flood watch was suspended noon Sunday, according to the NWS. High surf and small craft advisories continue Sunday, along with a high risk of rip currents.聽

The NWS warns of hazardous surf conditions, which may continue through early next week.

Heavy rain, thunderstorms and breezy conditions are forecast to continue into Sunday. The NWS reports Chantal will move farther inland during Sunday and weaken through Sunday night.

Sunday's high temperature is 85 degrees, with a low of 76.
