The South Carolina Forestry Commission announced the Covington Drive fire that burned more than 2,000 acres in Carolina Forest reached 100% containment Wednesday, May 21.
Forestry officials declared the 2,000-acre fire contained because recent rainfall in the area helped extinguish hot spots that have been smoldering for weeks.
Firefighting resources have worked toward containment since the start of the fire just over 80 days ago. While the fire is now considered contained, officials will continue to monitor the fire area until it is controlled.
Officials are monitoring whether any interior burning reappears if the area experiences another dry weather pattern.
A fire is controlled once officials determine there is no threat the fire will begin again and no need for fire officials to monitor the fire area.
