One person died in a crash after a vehicle hit a guardrail and overturned on S.C. Highway 31 in the Little River area Tuesday, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The crash happened about 8:52 p.m. on S.C. Highway 31 near the exit to Highway 9, according to SCHP. The driver of an SUV was heading north when the vehicle veered off the road, hitting a guardrail and overturning.
Horry County Fire Rescue was dispatched to the scene at 8:57 p.m. According to an HCFR Facebook post, first responders were required to use extrication to remove the driver from the vehicle.
The Horry County Coroner's Office identified the driver as聽47-year-old Michael Smetanka of Mishawaka, Indiana. Authorities said Smetanka聽 died at the scene of multiple traumatic injuries.
