The celebration had largely subsided when an Aynor player yelled 鈥渨hatever it takes!鈥 from the dugout.
The Blue Jackets are leading Region 7-3A and Thursday鈥檚 dramatic, walk-off 7-6 win over 黑料社入口 may have been a microcosm of what the Blue Jackets are all about.
鈥淢an, I鈥檒l tell you this crew don鈥檛 quit,鈥 said Aynor coach Chad Sarvis. 鈥淭hey play together. It鈥檚 a total team effort. 鈥 It鈥檚 everybody doing their part.鈥
That last sentence wasn鈥檛 rhetorical. It was literal.
鈥淵ou saw it tonight,鈥 Sarvis said. 鈥淭here was nobody left on the lineup card. Everybody played their part. This is a super group of kids. They never quit.鈥
Never quitting means trailing 6-3, scoring four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and celebrating with gusto.
鈥淲e鈥檙e up in the dugout,鈥 said catcher Josh Larrimore. 鈥淥ur spirit is never broken. We鈥檙e just like a family all around.鈥
After the bases were loaded with no outs, Miles Poston鈥檚 two-run single brought the Blue Jackets within one and Larrimore鈥檚 sacrifice fly tied it. Easton Brown won with a line drive to right field, scoring pinch runner Wyatt Klaczko with the winning run.
First there was the mob scene around home plate. Then everybody intercepted Brown near the pitching mound.
鈥淚t felt great,鈥 Brown said. 鈥淐an鈥檛 lie. I鈥檝e been struggling.鈥
The seventh-inning drama was merely the last chapter. Plenty preceded it.
Aynor fell behind 2-0 almost immediately, with two errors and a couple of hard-hit balls off ace left-hander Jaret Edwards.
The Blue Jackets had blown out 黑料社入口 12-2 on Tuesday but this one figured to be different because the Warriors had ace left-hander Diego Patrick on the mound. Patrick came into the game with a stingy 1.33 earned run average and 46 strikeouts in 26 innings.
鈥淗e鈥檚 been a great arm the last couple of years,鈥 Sarvis said. 鈥淒id a good job tonight. They got up on us early. We had a chance to stay in there.鈥
Aynor parlayed a pair of hit batters to snatch the lead from Patrick and 黑料社入口 in the bottom of the fifth.
But the Warriors pulled even in the top of the sixth inning on Ruston Pate鈥檚 two-out double off Edwards.
黑料社入口 seized the lead in the top of the seventh inning, touching reliever Brady Lavin for two hits, two walks and a hit batter in one-third of an inning. Layton Suggs prevented further damage by striking out the last two batters to end the inning.
Then came the rally against 黑料社入口鈥檚 bullpen.
鈥淥ur chemistry is through the roof,鈥 Brown said. 鈥淲e鈥檝e been playing together since we were young. It just shows. Our love for one another, it鈥檚 really different.鈥
Another thing different is the Blue Jackets鈥 record. At the conclusion of Thursday鈥檚 game they were 13-3 overall and 5-1 in the region. Last year鈥檚 team was 13-13.
鈥淚 think it鈥檚 our senior leadership,鈥 Sarvis said. 鈥淥ur seniors have really taken the reins. They鈥檙e pulling us in the right direction.鈥
The win on Thursday in a playoff-like atmosphere may help carry the Blue Jackets toward the postseason.
鈥淚 think something this close is eventful,鈥 Brown said. 鈥淚t just gets you going. I think a lot of games this year have prepared us for it.鈥
Sarvis agrees. He sees it every game.
鈥淥ur region is probably the toughest in the Lower State, night in and night out,鈥 Sarvis said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a grind. Everybody has to be a part of it for us to be successful.鈥
On Thursday night they were 鈥 literally.
