MyHorry黑料社入口, an Horry County news outlet owned by 黑料社入口 Publishers, won 13 S.C. Press Association awards for the newsroom's local coverage in 2024.

The team brought home a first-place award for its 2024 "Beach Blitz" special football magazine. The 88-page publication previewed the 2024 high school football season, featuring stories on the county's teams and highlighting top players.

"We have one of the hardest working teams around, and I'm so thankful for how dedicated they are to providing the best coverage for Horry County," said Hannah Strong Oskin, executive editor of MyHorry黑料社入口. "We have a thankless job 鈥 so it's great to be recognized at the state level."

MyHorry黑料社入口 publishes four weekly papers 鈥 The Horry Independent, Myrtle Beach Herald, Carolina Forest Chronicle and The Loris Scene 鈥 and a monthly paper, North Strand 黑料社入口. Additionally, the company publishes special sections throughout the year, which include Information Please, the annual football special magazine and specials that preview area festivals.

The team also brought home SCPA awards Friday, April 4, for government coverage, feature writing and photography.

Managing Editor Tommy Cardinal won a first-place award for government beat reporting for his coverage of Atlantic Beach's election saga.

鈥淚t鈥檚 humbling that our work covering Atlantic Beach鈥檚 election was recognized by the press association, and I鈥檓 grateful for my editor and publisher for recognizing the importance of covering the topic in depth," Cardinal said. "Voting rights and election integrity are cornerstones of a democratic society and the press鈥檚 watchdog role in the counting and certification of results is vital, no matter the number of voters.鈥

Cardinal won second place for sports enterprise reporting for his coverage of Myrtle Beach's investment in sports tourism. His other awards include a first-place award for personality photo or portrait, and first- and second- place awards in the pictorial category.

Joe Wedra, sports and education reporter, won first place for sports enterprise reporting for a story on multi-sport athletes, first place in the sports feature story category for a story headlined "Green Sea Floyds student overcomes heart tumor, major surgery, returns to football field," and second place for sports video.

"I鈥檓 grateful to have the opportunity to cover athletics here in Horry County and shine light on our amazing high school students," Wedra said. "I truly believe that if you want to see the very best of what your hometown has to offer, go check out and support your local high school athletes. Their hard work is deserving of attention and the spotlight, and I feel honored to be able to share the stories of our local athletes and coaches."

Reporter Casey Jones won second place in the news feature writing category for his story headlined "'It wasn't my time to go': First responders remember 9/11 after 23 years" and third place for profile feature writing for his story on Horry County's first Black police detective recalling the Jim Crow days.

"Thank you, Horry County residents, for letting us tell your inspirational stories," Jones said.

Reporter Tom O'Dare won two third-place awards for lifestyle feature writing and arts and entertainment writing for his stories on a former Myrtle Beach mayor and a Myrtle Beach band rocking on for more than four decades.

"I鈥檓 thankful to 黑料社入口 Publishers for allowing me to continue to tell the stories of Horry County," O'Dare said.

The S.C. Press Association was established in 1852, and represents and serves dozens of South Carolina newspapers. The association holds its annual awards ceremony in the spring to recognize the hard work of South Carolina journalists.
