A 16-year-old North Carolina boy who was arrested in connection with a mass shooting that injured 11 people in Little River Memorial Day weekend may be tried as an adult.
Jimmy Richardson, 15th Circuit Solicitor, filed a motion on Thursday, June 5, asking the court to determine if the boy should stand trial as an adult.
鈥淭he Solicitor鈥檚 Office has 鈥 reviewed the case and has determined, along with our law enforcement partners, that, in the state鈥檚 opinion, this matter would be most appropriately handled in the Court of General Sessions,鈥 Richardson said in a news release.
The juvenile remains in the custody of the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice in Columbia.
According to the Horry County Police Department, charges against the juvenile will include eight counts of attempted murder.
The shooting occurred on Sunday, May 25 on the dock along Watson Avenue after an excursion on the Hurricane II party boat.
Eleven people were treated at area hospitals after the shooting. None of the injuries were life-threatening.
A 19-year-old man has also been arrested in Lake County, Illinois in connection with the shootings, according to Horry County police. Shawon Shamarion Williams is expected to be charged with multiple counts of attempted murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.
